Gordon Bartlett will use Saturday’s opening pre-season match at Leverstock Green to take a look at towering striker Jay Brockway.

The 22-year-old, who stands at an imposing 6ft 5in, has been trying out with Wealdstone after relocating to west London from Wales.

A powerhouse of a forward, Brockway is a personal trainer who took a year out from the game after playing in the Welsh second-tier for Haverfordwest County.

Wealdstone have aldmitted defeat in the race for former Wimbledon man Charlie Strutton and Stones boss Bartlett is looking to put the finishing touches to a squad that was this week supplemented by the signing of Hayes & Yeading’s Jack Mills.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who can also play at right-back, played Conference South football last season and has been training with Stones.

He suffered relegation with Phil Babb’s men – although it has since emerged they will remain in the division after being handed a reprieve – but was a bright spark for the struggling club.

Tall and mobile, Mills is capable of dictating play from midfield, has a keen eye for a pass and also chipped in with three goals for the Beaconsfield Road outfit last term.

Injuries and a high player turnover at Hayes & Yeading saw the utility man shifted about in different formations and he proved he can hold his own in a defensive role.

Slotting in on the right side of defence, Mills’s energy and enthusiasm makes him more than capable of operating at the back.

Despite a disappointing campaign with United, Mills has bundles of experience and also played for Staines Town in the Conference South.

He started his career at Reading, where he worked with Hayes & Yeading assistant manager Tristan Lewis, and spent time on loan at Oxford City and in Holland with Telstar.

Released by the Royals in 2012, Mills – who twice represented England at youth level – turned down an offer to return to United for another season in favour of a move to the Vale.

Wealdstone last week added one other former United player to their ranks in the form of Toby Little.

The 25-year-old, who attended the Chelsea FC Academy, joins from Southern League outfit Chesham United and can play anywhere up and down the left channel.

However, it looks as though Bartlett will have to do without midfielder Scott McCubbin until the turn of the year, as work commitments on a project with West Ham are preventing him from playing for the Stones.

Elsewhere, Ian Bates’s Wembley will be playing in the Spartan South Midlands Premier this season, following the publication of the league constitution this week.
