QPR have been linked with a move for veteran goalkeeper Shay Given if Alex Smithies' move to the Premier League materialises.

Smithies has been discussed this week as a potential target for promotion contenders Huddersfield Town, and the 24-year old could yet be tempted if his hometown club are victorious in today's Play-Off final against Reading.

Given, who has a wealth of top-flight experience with the likes of Newcastle, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Stoke City, has been released by the Potters this summer and would be a shrewd addition to the R's should they need to replace the current number one.

Speaking to the Huddersfield Daily Examiner about his future earlier this week, Smithies said: "I don't know, it's hard to say isn't it.

“I don't know anything about the rumours but it is my club and in the long-term future who knows what's going to happen?

“Right now I'm happy at QPR and I've got three years left on my contract so I'm in no rush to get out.”

If Smithies was to leave then Given would certainly be seen as a more than ample replacement, should he be interested in a move to the Championship.
