Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of Brentford defender Jack O’Connell.

The 22-year-old has failed to make inroads at Griffin Park since arriving last year from Blackburn Rovers.

Former Bees manager Mark Warburton completed the signing of O’Connell on a three-year contract but he has since left the club.

O’Connell has only managed 16 games since joining the Bees and has fallen further down the pecking order with the signing of John Egan .

New Blades manager Chris Wilder is looking to put his own stamp on the United squad and sees O’Connell as a good fit for the Bramall Lane outfit.

Sources in Sheffield claim a deal could even be completed today with Brentford set to rake in a considerable fee for the player.

Meanwhile, the Bees return to action this evening as they open their pre-season fixture list with a friendly at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park.
