Wealdstone remain hopeful of hanging onto prized asset Tom Pett during the January transfer window, despite a cluster of Football League scouts monitoring the midfielder’s progress.

Pett has been watched by the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Swindon Town and Port Vale this season after playing a starring role in the Stones’ Ryman Premier title charge with 14 goals so far.

The scouts have been scribbling notes on the 22-year-old’s progress from the stands, but it seems all has been quiet in the boardrooms of the interested onlookers as no formal bids have yet been lodged.

Pett signed a two-year contract with the Grosvenor Vale club at the end of the 2011-2012 campaign that ties him to the club until this summer at the latest, meaning any club who wants to take the hotshot will have to stump up a fee.

Stones manager Gordon Bartlett this week confirmed he has yet to receive the dreaded phone call, although the wily old character did admit he would not be surprised if teams were interested given Pett’s rise this term.

“We’ve had nothing come into the club,” Bartlett said. “The only thing I can say is that there have been scouts from other clubs at our games on numerous occasions this season, but that is the same any year. Nothing has come in from another club though. If it does we would tell Tom but at the moment there’s been no official interest.

“My major plus is that I think Tom should be getting 20 goals a season. I felt he could do it last year and he’s well on track for that this year.

“I would be delighted if he could manage it because he has matured as a player and has got undoubted ability.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if people were interested in him but in the meantime we want to win the championship - that’s our aim - and if someone moves on to further their own career then good luck to them.

“We’ve had it before and I’m sure we’ll have it again, but nobody has come forward for Tom at the moment.”

Bartlett was busy on the phone last week however, recruiting Carl McCluskey from Hendon and Michael Malcolm following his release by Maidenhead United, a replacement for Chris Moore, who left the club on Tuesday night.

The duo made their debuts in Saturday’s disappointing 3-2 defeat to Canvey Island, which saw the in-demand Pett hit the target along with Jonathan Wright.

“It’s no secret that I’ve been after Carl for a couple of years,” Bartlett said.

“I’d made him a couple of offers, which he’d declined, and it has proved to be third time lucky. I’ve always liked him as a player.

“The one major asset that Carl’s got is that he’s comfortable in a number of positions and, given the situation we’re in at the moment, I think that could be very important for us going into the second-half of the season.

“In addition to that, he’s got his fair share of goals.

“I think he’s an important addition to the squad.

“If you look at the way Hendon have used him, he’s primarily been deployed in midfield, but he’s equally comfortable doing a job at the back or up front.

“Michael’s certainly had a few clubs. I’ve been looking for a bit of pace up there.

“I’d spoken to Drax [Maidenhead boss Johnson Hippolyte] in the middle of the week about taking him on loan, but by Thursday evening he’d become a free agent. We jumped in quickly.”

Wealdstone’s trip to East Thurrock was postponed on Tuesday night due to electrical problems at Rookery Hill.
