Rio Ferdinand has passed his medical at QPR ahead of a free transfer to Loftus Road.

The central defender has been without a club since leaving Manchester United in the summer and has just returned to England after spending the summer working in Brazil as a pundit for the BBC.

R's boss Harry Redknapp held talks with Ferdinand earlier this week to thrash out a deal for the 35-year-old.

And a move back to the capital for the Londoner will be completed shortly after he successfully passed a medical.

Redknapp handed Ferdinand his debut as a teenager at West Ham and will be reunited with the former Leeds star, who is expected to sign a 12-month contract with the Hoops.

Meanwhile, QPR are considering a move for Aston Villa's Dutch defender Ron Vlaar if they fail to land Cardiff City's Steven Caulker .
