QPR's pursuit of Watford striker Troy Deeney could depend on whether Liverpool reject Loic Remy stays or goes.

Rs boss Harry Redknapp confirmed his interest in Deeney, who is also being eyed by fellow Premier League new boys Leicester and Burnley, earlier this week.

Since then, Remy's move to Anfield has collapsed, with Redknapp ready to welcome the Frenchman back to Loftus Road.

He said: “Troy Deeney is a player we are interested in, but there is nothing happening at the moment, and I don't know if we will pursue it or not.

“We will have to see what happens with Remy, and we need to know whether he's staying or not as we can't have just two strikers, and we can't be suddenly losing him on transfer deadline day.

“We have to make sure we're prepared. If he's staying, we need to get Remy fit, and we've still got two weeks to do that.”

Redknapp, who dismissed reports linking his side with a move for Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o as 'pure speculation', is more interested in filling out his midfield following Esteban Granero's return to Spain.

Despite Redknapp's best efforts to keep the 27 year old, who signed from Real Madrid two years ago, Granero this week joined Real Sociedad, where he had a loan spell last season, on a permanent deal.

The Rs boss added: “We haven't done anything yet, we've only bought two players. We still need to improve the squad for sure, and will have to look as we go.

“Spain is where he (Granero) wants to be, which leaves us short in the middle. We need a couple of midfield players as we only have two or three.

“We can't go into the season with just Ali Faurlin, Joey Barton and Karl Henry. We need a couple of top quality midfielders to come in and strengthen us in there.”
