Slavisa Jokanovic hailed his Fulham side after they claimed a 1-0 win over Newcastle but, once again, stated his desire to sign four or five players.

The Whites claimed an opening day victory against the Magpies thanks to Matt Smith's first half strike.

Newcastle felt aggrieved after having penalty appeals turned down but this did not bother Jokanovic.

He said: “We played with energy, with the right mentality, like a team. Generally it is a different ambience on the field.

“It was a fantastic show of support from our side – a great night for us. But this night is over in few minutes. We have to be ready for what's in front of us.”

Despite the win, the Serbian was keen to push for further investment from owner Shahid Khan, especially after selling Ross McCormack to Aston Villa for £12million.

He added: “My team is very short. Generally I am pleased with how my team made preparation in pre-seaason.

“We worked hard. I believe we are more of a football team now than we were before. I don't have space to send some players out right now.

“Matt Smith is part of my team but I expect to sign four or five more players that will be ready to come into the team.

“The Championship is so long. I said we were ready for Newcastle but not ready for the whole season.

“Yes. We need to make investment and generally its £12m more. It doesn’t make sense to spend less than £12m.”
