Fulham are looking at signing Marcelo Djalo as a replacement for Cameron Burgess in their U23 squad, as opposed to adding him to their first team straight away.

The 23-year-old centre back, who has played for Badalona, Granada's B team, Juventus, Girona and Murcia before signing for Lugo in 2016, has been linked to Fulham amidst suggestions he has been identified as a target by the club's analytics department despite reservations from the coaching staff that he wouldn't be worthwhile.

However, it is understood that the club view him as a signing for the U23 side initially, replacing 21-year-old Burgess who saw his promising youth career dealt a blow by ex-manager Felix Magath in an opening day game at Ipswich, where he was played out of position in a central midfield role.

The Australian has now joined Scunthorpe and Fulham will look to add Djalo to the U23 squad as his replacement and will monitor his progress with an eye on moving him to the first team when he is ready and established.

Despite only being able to play in the U23s as an U23 player until October, Fulham will use on of the three overage places they have in their squad for Djalo.

The Spaniard is not a replacement for Tomas Kalas, with whom Fulham are still hoping to sign on a permanent deal.
