Jose Mourinho is expected to go back on his previous assurance that Chelsea were done in the transfer market this summer and buy a striker – but only if he can offload Fernando Torres.

The Spaniard, who has struggled following his £50m move to Chelsea three and a half years ago, still has two seasons left on his contract.

With one of the highest wages in football, around £175k a week, a permanent switch seems all but impossible.

However, Torres had been lined-up with a possible loan move to either Spain or Italy – with Chelsea picking up part of the wage bill.
