Brentford have made Sam Saunders available for loan in order for the winger to gain first team football.

The former Dagenham & Redbridge man, who signed a new one-year contract in January, has been limited to six appearances as a substitute so far this campaign after returning from a knee injury.

Toumani Diagouraga benefited from a spell at Portsmouth last season and is now an ever present in Mark Warburton's XI and the Bees boss hopes Saunders would benefit in the same way.

He said: “Sam is a fantastic pro. David and I spoke to Sam. He's in the squad every week and came on the other night, not through any sympathy but because he was there to make a contribution.

Precedent: Toumani Diagouraga used his loan move to return to the squad.

“He was comfortable on the ball, keeping it moving and made good decisions.

“He's desperate to get a run of games together and we talked about Toumani going to Portsmouth last season.

“He went there, played six games, and never looked back.

“That may be the case for Sam, but I'm also being selfish as he's invaluable around the place.”

Nick Proschwitz is likely to leave on loan , while Liam Moore joined from Leicester City until the end of the season.
