Dean Smith doesn't have a number of incomings at Brentford in mind but insisted that any player to leave Griffin Park in January will be replaced.

The Bees allowed Toumani Diagouraga to join Leeds and Jota to return home to Eibar for personal reasons, while James Tarkowski's strike action helped force a transfer to Burnley.

However, they decided not to bring any new faces, preferring instead to focus on signing Romaine Sawyers, Daniel Bentley and John Egan when their contracts expired in the summer.

Brentford will be active in the January transfer window and Smith has previously prioritised a defensive midfielder but refused to reveal a quantity of players required.

He said: “We don't have a number in mind. We have general discussions on where we need to strengthen.

“We'll strengthen where we need to. If we need to strengthen the squad. If there are outgoings then we'll have to replace whether it's people who are not playing and feel they need to get games elsewhere.

“It's not the biggest squad. Rico Henry is getting nearer, Callum Elder is nearer. Alan Judge is getting closer as well but we don't have a date in mind for him.”
