Brentford are closing in on a deal to sign highly rated Walsall full back Rico Henry.

The 19-year-old worked with Bees head coach Dean Smith at the Bescot Stadium after coming through the Saddlers' youth setup.

Henry has become a key player for the Midlands side and has caught the eye of many admirers from Championship and even Premier League clubs.

Speaking to the Express and Star after Walsall's 5-2 win over Grimsby, Saddlers boss Jon Whitney refused to speak about his star player's future amid speculation he is to have a medical at Brentford today.

He said: “There is always lots of talk about Rico Henry. I have got no comment on Rico.

“Maybe something might develop before the window closes but I’ve got no comment at the moment.”

One of Henry's many admirers is former Aston Villa and Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood.

He revealed in an interview with the Telegraph in February this year that he would have signed the 19-year-old on the spot last summer after the full back impressed in a pre-season friendly.

Brentford sold left back and captain Jake Bidwell in the summer and brought in Callum Elder on loan to replace him.

The Bees are in desperate need of width going forward and Smith may consider using Henry on the left wing to provide attacking threat.
