Brentford will act quickly to replace Jake Bidwell after his departure to QPR, Dean Smith has confirmed.

The Bees have been aware of their former captain's contractual situation for some time and have already been scouring the market.

Much like the signing for Daniel Bentley, with goalkeeper David Button out of contract, the west London club have targets lined up.

And Brentford head coach Smith would like to get a new face in to compete with Tom Field, who has been offered a new contract, ahead of departing to Germany for a training camp.

“We'll look to try and get somebody in over the next week or so. This has been bubbling along with Jake Bidwell for a while. We've got plenty of options we've been looking at,” Smith said.

Excellent debut: Tom Field celebrates with his Brentford team mates

“Tom Field been offered a new deal. We're hoping to get that tied up soon. He impressed last season when he came in against Fulham.

“He's one we can see moving forward with the football club but we're looking to get a left back in as well to improve once again.

“It's going to be a tough ask to improve on Jake Bidwell as he's very consistent. There's a lot of really good players out there and hopefully we can.

The Bees are also looking in other areas and Smith would like to have more fresh faces in place before they head to Germany for their pre-season camp.

He added: “It's always nice to get signings done so early as you're training and you're coaching and the work you do during pre-season is important.

“It's great to have Romaine, John and Daniel Bentley with us now but we'll be looking to add some more as well.

Brentford returned to pre-season training on July 1 and Smith has been pleased with how the squad have started.

He added: "It was a really good session. The players have come back looking bright and looking forward to the season getting underway."
