AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley will make a decision on the future of triallist Joey Jones in the next couple of days.
The former Leicester City and Yeovil Town youngster has been training with the Dons in a bid to earn a deal, as revealed last week by Get West London.
Jones, who can play in defence or midfield, is one of a number of hopefuls trying to impress Ardley as the Kingsmeadow chief looks for the final piece of his jigsaw.
"We still need more cover in the defensive areas," said Ardley. "We are looking at one or two options.
"Joey has done very well and is a good player. His best position is probably holding midfield, although he can play centre-half and right-back.
"There are a couple of clubs who are keen on him, so we don't want to stand in his way."
Defender Callum Kennedy is still training at the club's New Malden base and is another possible solution, despite being released at the end of last season.
Meanwhile, former Dons loanee Kwesi Appiah has rejoined Cambridge United from Crystal Palace.
