Tom Bird has become the latest casualty of Hayes & Yeading’s revolving-door policy at Kingfield.

The 25-year-old signed for United in the summer of 2013 from Ryman Premier league outfit Kingstonian.

Bird was substituted at half-time during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Concord Rangers and will not be pulling on the red shirt again.

Hayes & Yeading manager Phil Babb has confirmed the defender’s departure and gave the form of Adam Everitt as his reason for Bird flying the nest.

Babb said: “Unfortunately for Tom, and he’s a good player, he came into the club as a left-back. Adam Everitt has excelled in that position this season, so Tom’s chances have been limited there, but when we’ve asked him to do a job in midfield he’s done very well.

“But again, we need to freshen things up. Tom is playing out of position and we probably need a specialist in there. Tom has done very well for us but it’s time to freshen things up and bring a new face in on that left-hand side with a little bit more experience.”

Babb this week added teenage central defender Ben Brown to his release from Championship side Queens Park Rangers, making his debut in the weekend defeat to Concord.

However, the United manager still reckons more new faces are needed at the back to help halt the slide that has seen the club record just one win eight games.

He added: “We need to strengthen defensively. We’ve conceded seven goals in three games, which isn’t good enough for the quality of the players we’ve got in the back-four and the goalkeeper.

“It might need freshening up and players need to realise they’ve got to fight for their positions. We’re at the midway point of the season and you will see a lot of clubs cleaning house. We’ll be no different in that respect.”
