Bayo Akinfenwa has rejected a move to the MLS to sign a new deal at AFC Wimbledon.

The 33-year-old striker’s future came into doubt this summer after he stalled on agreeing fresh terms at Kingsmeadow to consider his options.

Neal Ardley has rewarded the star forward with an improved contract after a superb season that saw him collect two club awards and hit the headlines in the FA Cup.

Akinfenwa has spent the last few weeks across the pond weighing up whether to make the move to America and had also been sounded out by League One and League Two sides at home.

However, Ardley has managed to keep hold of the powerhouse Dons hitman and is delighted to have the big man around for another 12 months.

He told Dons Player: “I am very happy that Bayo has agreed to stay with us. I knew he would have interest from elsewhere before he went away for the summer.

“Bayo mentioned that he was going to America and he wanted to have a look at that, but he said if he came back here then he would sign for us.

“Bayo has been true to his word and I did not expect anything less from him. I am delighted because he was a big part of what we did last season.

“If we can put better players around him than we perhaps did last season and play good attacking football then we may be able to achieve something.”

Akinfenwa bagged 15 goals for Wimbledon last season, including a memorable strike against Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool in the cup.
