Tommy Smith's age won't prevent him from getting a Brentford contract if he earns it, according to Bees boss Mark Warburton.

The former QPR, Cardiff, Sunderland, Derby and Watford striker has been training with the Griffin Park outfit for the past week.

Bees fans have expressed surprise that a club so dedicated to developing young talent in recent years are looking at a 34 year old.

But Warburton insists Smith's won't be held against him if he shows enough in training to be worth a punt on.

He said: “I've known Tommy since we were both at Watford and I know just how good he is. We are having a look at him, and he is having a look at us.

“He is a model pro who looks after himself and is still unbelievably fit. He wouldn't still be with us if we were going to rule him out due to his age.

“We have some very talented young players at this club, but especially moving up a level, you need to make sure you have some wise old heads too.”
