In all fairness to the Rangers boss, he admitted his side were 'second best' in the 2-0 defeat to Brentford.

What he didn't say was how they looked a yard off the pace all night.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink alluded to a defeat worse than the September 6-0 Newcastle caning - and it's easy to see why.

Brentford are a decent outfit, but even their own fans have no more than outside hopes of the play-offs. Newcastle are all but nailed-on champions with their array of Premier League players.

What hurt Rs fans was a lack of urgency and apparent motivation apart from a brief period after the break when presumably with a rocket in a painful place from the gaffer, they gave it a bit of a go in front of millions watching on TV.

Dejected: Pawel Wszolek at the end of the game

After the second Brentford goal, it was lights out and the last fan was left to lock up the Loft behind him.

There were raised eyebrows when left-back Jack Robinson was in the team after just two halves of U23 football - and a six-month lay-off before that.

He was up against the fleet-footed Josh Clarke - and it looked it.

Grant Hall was back to fitness, and sticking the ex Spur in the centre alongside Steven Caulker and Nedum Onuoha on the right with experienced James Perch on the left looked the better bet to all and sundry save the Rs boss.

The jury's out on whether Sebastian Polter and Karl Henry would have added anything to the side.

Clean pair of heels: Josh Clarke takes on Jack Robinson

But the unmistakable fact is this time last year, almost to the day, QPR were beaten 1-0 by Brentford at Griffin Park. At that stage, Chris Ramsey had garnered 22 points - and the very next game got the boot after a 1-0 defeat to Derby.

Hasselbaink has got 19 points from the same amount of games, and has a task on his hands to get a reaction at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Note the symmetry.

Brentford is/was the game before an East Midlands test.

Is Hasselbaink in immediate trouble? Probably not. But too many more Brentfords and his rope will be decidedly shorter.

As Rs director off football Les Ferdinand said when the vultures hovered over Ramsey's head: 'we're in a results driven business.'
