Jose Mourinho says that Roman Abramovich may sack him for coming third in the Premier League – but that he is not expecting to be shown the door just yet.

Mourinho's first season back at Stamford Bridge has been one of transition, with a final league placing of third, and a semi-final exit from the Champions League.

In the past, a trophyless campaign would have been enough to see off the Chelsea manager, but Mourinho is sure that wont be happening to him.

"Maybe Abramovich will sack me tomorrow, I don't know," he joked after the 2-1 win at Cardiff that drew the curtain down on the season.

"But that is not what I was promised, not what we spoke about when we sat down and discussed where Chelsea were (in their development).

"Chelsea started an era in 2003/4 with Abramovich and went in a certain direction. That had an immediate impact - the double title. That team was ready to be successful for a decade.

“That era is now over and we start again, and this season is the first season of a new period.

"We are doing the work well, we are not asking for eight or nine years to get us success.

“It almost happened this season, but those defeats against Aston Villa and Sunderland made it difficult."

Most of Chelsea's stars now head off to the world cup, and the axe is expected to fall on the training ground rather than in the dugout – with a host of summer changes to playing staff.
