Brentford were made to rue their missed opportunities as they were deservedly beaten by an impressive Barnsley side at Griffin Park.

Goals in each half from Adam Armstrong and Sam Winnall ensured the men from Yorkshire returned north with all three points and ended Brentford’s 10 game unbeaten run at home.

It was the Bees who had the first chance at goal when Sam Saunders, at the byline with his back to goal, managed to hold the ball up and slip it through only for Adam Davies in the Barnsley goal to dive on it before a Brentford player could tap in.

Half way through the opening 45 Barnsley showed some attacking promise when Marley Watkins bounced on an out of position Yoann Barbet to cross for Winnall who’s sliced shot went wide of the target.

Sulley Kaikai then missed a guilt edge chance from no more than eight yards after Scott Hogan cut inside his man and squared the ball. But Kaikai got far too much air on his tame effort and it went over without troubling Davies.

Armstrong then opened the scoring on the half hour for the Tykes, who had grown into the game, after Watkins knocked the ball back across goal and - despite getting a hand to it - John Bentley could not keep it from nestling into the bottom corner.

Sam Saunders then came close to restoring parity in the contest when Maxime Colin found himself on the right and his cross was met by Saunders about 12 yards out, but it went inches over although Davies looked to have it covered.

Scott Hogan had the first chance of the second period as Brentford looked to get back on level terms. Half-time substitute Josh Clarke evaded the tackle of Andy Yiadom down the right to drive in a low cross which the Bee’s forward looked to steer goal wards but the angle was against him and Davies was untroubled.

Barnsley defender Angus MacDonald then showed his aerial ability and possibly should have done better when he rose comfortably to nod a free-kick goal bound but he didn’t get the direction and his header went over.

Winnall then doubled the visitors lead with a tap-in from a yard out after Ryan Kent had hit the post. The impressive Liverpool loanee Kent completed a sharp one-two with Armstrong on the edge of the box and his left-foot strike came back off the post and perfectly into the path of a grateful Winnall to score his fourth of the season.

Brentford almost pulled one back when Colin rifled in a volley which came off the apex of the woodwork after Clarke managed to cut the ball back inside via a deflection from the right.

Clarke was then involved again and had the best Bee’s chance of the game when he broke free on the right side of the box, but one-on-one with Davies he could not beat the Barnsley keeper as the ball cannoned behind.

Hogan then summed up the Bee’s day in the dying moments when he was put through down the right but with just the keeper to beat fired across goal and failed to even hit the target.
