Grimsby Town 2-1 Barnet

Barnet's nine-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end after losing away to fellow promotion hopefuls Grimsby Town.

Grimsby scored two second-half strikes through Ross Hannah and Liam Hearn while David Stephens' late wondergoal was only mere consolation.

George Sykes came in for Harry Crawford upfront to make his first ever Barnet, while Mark Byrne dropped to the bench and was replaced by Ahmed Abdulla in centre-midfield.

Despite Barnet having the better of the first-half, with them moving around the ball fluently, chances were few-and-far between for the visitors.

Luisma Villa and Kieron Cadogan both had free-kicks that were easily clutched by Grimsby stopper James McKeown, which was the same result when Elliott Johnson had a speculative effort from just outside the box.

The best chance of the half, though, fell to the equally unprodcutive hosts. After The Bees defence failed to clear a free-kick the ball dropped at the feet of Ross Hannah, who flashed his effort low and wide across Stack's goal.

Grimsby started the second-half much brighter, with Paddy McLaughlin hitting a shot into the side netting after the ball floated over the Barnet defence.

On 67 minutes Grimsby took the lead. The ball was wonderfully played through to Hannah, who calmly curled his strike into the corner of the goal.

Four minutes later and Barnet could, and should, have got back on equal terms. Jon Nurse, who came on as a substitute, whipped in a fantastic cross which Cadogan could only not wide of the goal.

This was an opportunity Davids' side were left to rue 12 minutes later when The Mariners extended their lead through Liam Hearn. The former Alfreton striker was given the freedom to turn before firing the ball low into the corner.

When it seemed all hope was lost, The Bees managed to claw a goal back in magnificent fashion. Noted for his usual solidity at the back, David Stephens pleasantly surprised the Barnet faithful when he controlled the ball before smashing a volley into the roof of the net from fully 35 yards.

The fans, though, returned from Cleethorpes without a point, with Luisma Villa spurned an injury-time effort with him exquisitly lfting the ball over the defence before tamely hitting the shot straight at McKeown.

Barnet drop down to 11th place with a loss but remain four points off Alfreton Town in the final play-off spot.
