Chelsea brushed aside a pathetic Newcastle United outfit as three goals inside the first 20 minutes gave the Blues the win.

Aided by some abysmal Magpies defending, Diego Costa, Pedro and Willian all found the net early on to give the home side a comfortable lead at the break.

Pedro had his second midway through the second half after more atrocious defending before Bertrand Traore scored his first Premier League goal to round off a convincing win.

Chelsea made the better start and it was no surprise when they took the lead after five minutes as Willian surged forward with the Magpies midfield and back line parting like the red sea.

Opener: Diego Costa

He played the ball through to Costa and his effort went across Rob Elliot and into the bottom corner.

There was more comical defending just four minutes later as Rolando Aarons pass to Georginio Wijnaldum was intercepted by Pedro and he raced clear to make it 2-0.

It was game over after 17 minutes as Fabricio Coloccini backed off Diego Costa and the Spain striker teed up Willian to put the game to bed.

The rest of the first half was one-way traffic but Chelsea suffered a setback before half-time as captain John Terry was forced off after colliding with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Willian nearly had his second and Chelsea's fourth when his free kick went over the five-man Newcastle wall, although only one of those defenders actually jumped, and Elliot was on hand to save the Magpies.

Willian celebrates

Newcastle made the better start to the second half, forcing a few corners, but were undone with another defensive error.

Steven Taylor, this time, failed to head Cesc Fabregas' ball over the top, allowing Pedro to slot home the fourth.

Chelsea were content to knock the ball around for the remaining 20 minutes with Thibaut Courtois largely a spectator.

They did grab a fifth as Cesar Azpilicueta played a on-two with Eden Hazard before crossing the ball to give Traore his magic moment.

There was time for Andros Townsend to pull a goal back in the final minute, leading to sarcastic joy from the Newcastle fans who sang 'We've scored a goal' but it was too little too late.
