Barnet could not capitalise on an early goal as the nine-men Bees went crashing out of the FA Cup 3–1 to Wycombe Wanderers.
The Conference leaders were looking to continue a six-game unbeaten streak stretching back a month but found their local rivals a rather more difficult task than recent opponents.
The Bees might have required a replay against Chelmsford City to reach the main draw of the Cup but looked the more enthusiastic side early on.
And their high tempo paid off barely three minutes into the match – with the wind behind them, returning captain Charlie MacDonald played John Akinde through.
The striker beat the offside trap, rounded Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram then made no mistake from a difficult angle with defenders tracking back.
The hosts continued to enjoy much of the ball as Wycombe struggled to gain possession, and fashioned multiple attempts which Ingram did well to keep out.
Things seemed to be going against Wycombe – the referee found himself out of favour with both the travelling fans and boss Gareth Ainsworth – but the official made no mistake in awarding a penalty on 34 minutes when Matt McClure was scythed down by Andy Yiadom in the box.
Paul Hayes despatched the penalty for his eighth goal of the season in all competitions.
The equaliser spurred Wycombe back into the game and the visitors were handed a further boost on the stroke of half-time when Sam Togwell was given a straight red card for upending Matt Bloomfield with two feet.
MacDonald made way for David Hunt at half time as Martin Allen attempted to shore up his midfield following Togwell's dismissal, but with ten men Barnet found things a struggle.
Both Sam Wood and McClure had attempts stopped by Graham Stack before Wycombe broke the deadlock on 59 minutes.
Aaron Pierre climbed the highest in the box to meet a Joe Jacobson corner to direct a header past Stack.
The Bees failed to get going in the second half attacking into the wind, and were made to pay again on 73 minutes when McClure beat the offside trap on a quick counter-attack.
He chipped Stack from the wing and Sam Wood applied the final touch from a yard out to make the result safe.
With time running out, Yiadom went crashing into Scowen right by the touchline in a slip of discipline and was, like Togwell 45 minutes before him, given his marching orders as the Bees finished two men short.
