Slavisa Jokanovic made two changes for his side's trip to St James' Park, with Ryan Sessegnon and Denis Odoi coming into the starting Xi in place of Chris Martin and Ryan Fredericks.

Fulham dominated the majority of the possession in the first ten minutes of the tie, but it was Newcastle who came closest to scoring when Vurnon Anita was played in, but his cross was cut out well by Tim Ream to deny the home side any sniff of goal.

The away side's fist chance came only minutes later when Tom Cairney lashed his strike over from 20-yards as Fulham broke on the counter.

But it was Fulham who took the lead when Cairney was allowed time on the ball at the edge of the Newcastle box to pick his spot and fire it into the top right hand corner 16 minutes into the tie.

David Button was on hand to stop Ciaran Clark from equalising in the 28th minute when he tipped his header from inside the six yard box over the cross bar and onto the roof of the net.

You could have been forgiven for thinking Newcastle would come out reinvigorated in the second half, but that wasn't the case and Fulham went two up six minutes in when the ball broke for Sessegnon who tucked it into the corner.

Finally Newcastle responded and started to get into the game and Gayle went close from a header in the 58th minute, which Button tipped over before Matt Ritchie fired a strike into the keeper's arms seconds after.

But Sessegnon made it three when he was played in by Aluko to fire home in the same corner to send the travelling Fulham fans who were housed in the highest tier of the ground wild.

Daryl Murphy came on as substitute and got one back for Newcastle with 15 left when he curled one in from the edge of the box after beating his man to give the hosts some hope.

Fulham got themselves last minute penalty when Sessegnon was fouled in the box, but Ream stepped up and blasted the penalty wide.

Here's how we rated the players.

Button 8: A dominant display from Button which bred confidence throughout the side. He made a couple of good saves early on that set the tone for the afternoon.

Odoi 7: Had a quiet game by comparisons to the rest of the side but did what he had to do well at left back and was reliable when Ritchie was in possession on that side.

Ream 8: A big game from Fulham's American today - he was outstanding at the back and made some vital blocks in the first 20 minutes to allow his side a solid grounding at the back. Missed a penalty in the dying moments but luckily it had no effect on the game.

Kalas 7: Along with Ream he marshaled Gayle well and looked solid against the physical threat that Murphy posed when he came on.

Malone 7: Didn't have much to do defensively and carried some threat forward, but the shine of his ventures forward was somewhat taken by Sessegnon's performance.

Sessegnon 9: What an talent this boy is - he took both of his goals with the composure of a seasoned pro and was a constant threat all game.

Cairney 8: Yet another superb display from Fulham's talisman - Newcastle tried to crowd him out all game yet he still found time and space and chipped it with another goal.

McDonald 8: As a result of the front four's performance, you may not have noticed McDonald today but he played the anchor role to perfection, shielding the back four and allowing Fulham's forwards to wreak havoc at St James' Park.

Johansen 7: Was in a rampant mood alongside Cairney, Kebano and Aluko and was able to find space between the midfield and back four with ease all game.

Kebano 7: Was a problem down Newcastle's left for the entire game and his direct running and skill caused problem after problem.

Aluko 8: Assisted both of Sessegnon's goals and was a nightmare for Newcastle's back line along with Johansen, Cairney and Kebano. His back heel assist for Sessegnon's first was a thing of beuaty.

Fredericks 6: Only played for the final six minutes at Newcastle but added an extra body in defence for the final few minutes.

Cyriac N/A: Played the final two minutes as Fulham added a physical presence but didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

Parker N/A: Same as Cyriac, he only played a few minutes in the tie.
