A late Scott Malone strike rescued Fulham from another Craven Cottage defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Fernando Forestieri topped off a slick Wednesday move on 10 minutes to give the visitors an early lead.

The Whites, fresh from two back-to-back wins, looked set to resume after the international break with defeat, but Malone hammered home one minute into injury time to rescue a point.

The result left Fulham wondering what might have been as they entered the game two points off a play-off position.

After a slow opening 10 minutes, the Whites were behind with the first real attack of the game.

A fine move by the visitors saw Gary Hooper’s backheel find Forestieri in space from 18 yards, and he slotted agonisingly beyond David Button , who had tipped the shot against the post.

The hosts were struggling to get a grip on the game but might have been level less than 10 minutes later when Kevin McDonald was picked out by a Stefan Johansen corner, only to head well over.

Barry Bannan then drove a shot over the bar after being picked out at the far post, before Gary Hooper prodded wide when Keiren Westwood’s goal kick cut the Whites defence apart.

Forestieri might have added a second when he lashed narrowly wide of the near post from 20 yards, but Fulham fought back after the break.

An early header from derby-day hero Sone Aluko flew over the bar as Slavisa Jokanovic’s men tried to find a way through a stern Wednesday wall.

Denis Odoi and Scott Parker were thrown on after 75 minutes in a bid to create something for the Whites , and the former made an immediate impact, finding Floyd Ayite - an earlier substitute - whose shot was blocked from close range.

Tom Cairney then struck a fierce effort from the edge of the box, but Westwood was level to it.

Fulham pressed late on and might have levelled when Ayite lashed an effort at goal from close range after a goalmouth scramble, only for it to be cleared behind.

From the resulting corner, Parker scuffed an effort into the ground but it dropped the wrong side of the far post.

One minute into stoppage time though, Malone lashed home from close range to save the Whites.

The hosts seized on their momentum and somehow were denied a winning goal in the remaining four minutes.
