Chelsea came from behind to claim a battling victory at Watford and maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.

The Blues made it two wins from two under Antonio Conte in the Premier League but they had to do it the hard way with a 2-1 comeback victory.

Etienne Capoue opened the scoring at Vicarage Road and looked to be sending the west Londoners home empty handed.

Conte had made a dream start to life at Stamford Bridge with three points at the first attempt in game one against West Ham United.

But this was largely a disappointing Blues performance, lacking a creative spark, and the shaky defensive errors creeping back into their game.

Walter Mazzarri set up the Hornets to be difficult to beat and there was nobody in the Blues ranks capable of picking the lock at the Vic.

However, Conte called from the cavalry in the second half as Cesc Fabregas, Victor Moses and Michy Batshuayi were all thrown on to salvage something from the game.

And it was the latter who snatched a share of the spoils late on with a goal made in Belgium as Hazard’s shot was spilled by Heurelho Gomes and Batshuayi pounced.

There was more drama to follow though as Diego Costa , just as he did against the Hammers, won it for the visitors and sent the away fans into raptures in the stands.

Here’s five things we learned from a memorable day for Chelsea fans in Watford.

Batman Begins

Chelsea's Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi celebrates scoring

There will be more calls for Batshuayi to be given his full Chelsea debut after this goalscoring cameo.

The £33million signing had to wait for his chance again here but made his mark by hitting the net 10 minutes from time.

That follows his assist for Costa in the win over West Ham, highlighting the impact he has made in his limited game-time so far.

Conte was said to be considering operating with two strikers up front this season before beginning the campaign with a more conservative setup.

But two games running now has seen the double act of Costa and Batman come up trumps for the boss and it is getting harder to leave one on the bench.

Better safe than sorry

Valon Behrami and Nordin Amrabat of Watford and Nemanja Matic of Chelsea

Willian was the surprise name missing from Chelsea’s team sheet at Watford.

The Brazilian was the club’s player of the season last term but was nowhere to be seen when the team sheets were handed out at Vicarage Road.

Antonio Conte confirmed he had decided to take no chances with the winger’s fitness after he complained of a problem with his thigh after training last week.

“He has a small problem with his calf so better not risked today,” the new Blues head coach said. “It's a little problem.”

Chelsea are played a 4-1-4-1 formation in Hertfordshire with Pedro coming into the side at the expense of the injured Samba Star.

Borrowed time for Ivanovic

Troy Deeney of Watford and Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea

Ola Aina was on the bench again for Chelsea with Branislav Ivanovic continuing on the right side of defence.

Conte likes to keep a settled backline, something he made clear in pre-season with the Blues, but there are serious question marks over the Serbian now.

He allowed Watford to open the scoring unchallenged by finding himself out of position and has started the season in similar form to that on display at the end of last term.

The full-back was often exposed under Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink as he was unable to make up lost ground defensively when bombing forward almost at will.

Willian does a fine job of covering the right channel to help out Ivanovic when he is in the team but Pedro offers nowhere near the protection.

Fabregas at a crossroads

Cesc Fabregas of Chelsea looks on from the sidelines

Fabregas cut a frustrated figure for the second weekend in a row as he took his place in the Chelsea dugout in Hertfordshire.

Conte last week suggested there was nothing untoward as the Spaniard missed out against West Ham in the season opener.

Rumours have linked him with Europe’s elite, including the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus, and even a return to former club Arsenal.

However, there was no change here as it was a watching brief for Fabregas again and, at the age of 29, the midfielder won’t want to spend his peak years on the sidelines.

He now has a decision to make as to whether he stays and fights for his place or seeks a way out before transfer deadline day on August 31.

Chelsea certainly missed his creativity as Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante are both more comfortable in a holding role.

The little magician turned the game on its head following his introduction and the fans showed him their appreciation at full time.

Cuadrado’s days at Chelsea appear numbered

Another Chelsea player with a keen eye on the closure of the transfer window is Juan Cuadrado.

The Colombian was omitted from the squad by Conte, as he was for the win over West Ham, strongly suggesting his exit is close to being sealed.

Cuadrado is widely expected to re-join Juventus, where he spent last season on loan, next week after his agent flew to London to thrash out a deal on Friday.

Conte admitted at his pre-match press conference that Chelsea had to wait for further news on the winger and he is already planning for life without the player.

Juventus are willing to pay €4million for another loan deal for Cuadrado and want to insert a clause into the terms which allows them to purchase him outright after 12 months.

The final fee is yet to be agreed by both parties.

Two sides of Conte

Walter Mazzarri, Manager of Watford, reacts

We saw both the style and swagger of Conte and the somewhat questionable fashion choices of the boss at Watford.

He took his place in the dugout all suited and booted, giving off the aura of a top-class continental manager at Vicarage Road.

But he soon began to channel his inner Tony Pulis in Hertfordshire as he donned a raincoat and sported a baseball cap, as we have been accustomed to seeing the West Brom chief wearing, before changing back for the second half.

Conte certainly has two sides to his personality as he appears serene and often funny in front of the press and then gestures wildly and aggressively on the touchline.

He now has the wardrobe to match!

Chelsea fans won’t care what he wears though, so long as he keeps his team fighting for every point like this.
