Birmingham City 1–0 Brentford
James Tarkowski's own goal brought Brentford's mini revival crashing to a halt at 10-man Birmingham City this afternoon.
Wins over Bournemouth and Blackpool had in turn halted a mini crisis for the Bees, but the side which has so comfortably swept aside both the league leaders and basement boys went missing at St Andrews.
Stuart Dallas kept his place at left back despite the return of Jake Bidwell from suspension, while Liam Moore came straight in at centre back for a second Bees debut.
Andre Gray has first sight of goal but fired wide with a cross-shot from a tight angle from Alex Pritchard's through ball, while Tarkowski cleared well from a Dave Cotterell cross bound for the right boot of former Bee Clayton Donaldson.
Tarkowski then put a header from a Jota corner just wide, before David Button got down superbly to his right to keep out a header from Donaldson.
But with a minute to go to the break, the hosts took the lead when a cross from the right evaded a diving header from Donaldson but sadly not a lunge from Tarkowski, who put through his own net.
Jonathan Douglas should have provided an instant equaliser in first half stoppage time when he headed over a point blank header from a Jon Toral, and the Bees went in a goal behind at the interval.
Paul Caddis, who looked Birmingham's best player all afternoon, put a belter wide just after the hour mark, and it should really have been 2-0 soon after, but Demerai Gray blasted over from point blank range following Donaldson's knock down.
Stephen Gleeson's long range effort was deflected wide as the hosts looked to turn the screw, while from the resulting corner, Gray – the one in Blue – curled a sublime effort just over from the edge of the area.
Sub Alan Judge twice fired wide from good positions as the game entered the closing stages, but it was too little too late for Mark Warburton's men, even though Birmingham's Stephen Gleeson was sent off late on for a stamp on Pritchard.
