Newcastle United halted Brentford's three-game unbeaten run in the Championship with a 2-1 win at Griffin Park.

Lasse Vibe equalised for the Bees after Dwight Gayle's first-half strike, before substitute Daryl Murphy tipped the game in Newcastle's favour.

In an unlucky result for Dean Smith's side, Vibe came close twice after his goal with the side also denied three decent shouts for a penalty in the closing stages.

The Bees put up a good fight against Rafa Benitez's dominant side, who now go top of the table.

Newcastle held possession for the opening minutes as Brentford struggled to take control which allowed two early chances for the Magpies with Daniel Bentley stopping Gayle's strike at the far post.

Andreas Bjelland's header fell straight to Karl Darlow in the Newcastle goal, before Gayle lashed the ball past Bentley to put Newcastle ahead.

Josh McEachran's pass set up a chance for Vibe who negotiated Newcastle's defence before Darlow denied the Bees an equaliser by blocking the ball with his leg.

Goalscorer Gayle was forced off due to injury, leaving Brentford the chance to gather momentum without the threat of the Championship's top goalscorer.

Play was waved on after Tom Field is brought down in the box despite calls for a penalty, before Nico Yennaris shot wide ahead of the half-time whistle.

Ryan Woods' corner was parried away by Darlow as the second half got underway, before Vibe found the net to give the home side an equaliser and a much-needed confidence boost.

Vibe looked as though he'd put Brentford in front soon after, but his wide strike hit the post soon before the ball was cleared on the goal line, before his next attempt went wide.

Substitute Daryl Murphy then put Newcastle ahead with a strike past Bentley after McEachran gave the ball away in his own half.

The Bees were denied a penalty after Egan's shirt was pulled in the box, which would've been an ideal opportunity for the Bees to come back and had further shouts when Philipp Hofmann's shirt received the same treatment and when the German striker was hauled down. It just wasn't Brentford's day
