Brentford make the short trip to AFC Wimbledon as the Carabao Cup gets underway on Tuesday evening.

The Bees could make as many as 11 changes from the side that lost at Sheffield United with a congested run of fixtures coming up in August.

Brentford have not tasted victory, in 90 minutes anyway, in each of the last three seasons with the last time they progressed past this stage coming in a 6-6 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge; the Bees went on to win on penalties.

They have been beaten by League Two opposition in each of the last two seasons; Oxford won 4-0 at Griffin Park, while Exeter triumphed 1-0 in the south west this time last year.

Brentford's recent form in this competition may be patchy but it's not as bad as AFC Wimbledon's.

Incredibly, since being promoted to the Football League in 2011, Kingsmeadow is playing host to League Cup football for the first time with the League One Dons being handed away ties in every season and they returned empty handed on each occasion.

You can keep up to date with all the action from south west London with us. This page will update automatically so there is no need to refresh or adjust your sets.

GOAL! AFC Wimbledon 1-3 Brentford (Justin Shaibu 119)

Game over. Justin Shaibu nets his first goal for the Bees and it’s a thumping goal, driving home from the edge of the area. That’s Brentford into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

AFC Wimbledon are pushing bodies forward to get an equaliser. They may as well.

AFC Wimbledon force a corner - it’s headed back to the edge of the area. It comes back in but Daniels gathers.

We’re back underway. Dean Smith and Richard O’Kelly nipped back to the dressing rooms at half-time. We’re 15 minutes away. Josh McEachran goes for goal from the kick off but it’s wide.

AFC Wimbledon 1-2 Brentford (Ollie Watkins 115)

Ollie Watkins gives Brentford the lead and opens his account for the club. The corner is worked short and the former Exeter man curls it into the top corner.

Brilliant defending from Romaine Sawyers as he tracks back from a Dons counter. The pace of this game has slowed as the Bees hit back to win a corner.

Brentford have made their fourth substitution as Justin Shaibu replaced Neal Maupay

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis’ evening is over as he’s replaced by Henrik Dalsgaard. Maxime Colin moves to left back.

Paul Robinson has scored in one end and he’s cleared off the line at the other. Romaine Sawyers the man denied.

AFC Wimbledon have made their fourth change as Egli Kaja comes on for Andy Barcham.

We’re ready to go in extra time. The clock has reset to zero. I always liked it when they went up to 100. Brentford go on the attack straight away but can’t get the shot away.

I seem to say it every year but can’t we just go to penalties instead

How would penalties work?

As seen for the first time in in the FA Community Shield on Sunday between Arsenal and Chelsea, the new ABBA system came into play, whereby teams take two penalties together, rather than taking turns.

The trial of the new system is being backed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in response to the suggestion that the player taking the second kick is under greater mental pressure in the current format. Therefore, a different order of kickers is being trialled in an experiment to reduce any apparent advantage the team taking the first kick may have.

In simple terms, the team taking the first kick in each ‘pair’ of kicks will alternate as follows.

1st kick – Team A

2nd kick – Team B

3rd kick – Team B

4th kick – Team A

5th kick – Team A

6th kick – Team B

7th kick – Team B

8th kick – Team A

9th kick – Team A

10th kick – Team B

11th kick – Team B

12th kick – Team A and so on…

We’re nearing extra time and that could bring about an extra substitution in line with the new rules for this competition.

Brentford force three corners but can’t find a winner.

AFC Wimbledon nearly have the lead again through a Yoann Barbet own goal but his header drifts wide of the post. From the corner, the ball is scrambled clear but the whistle has gone and the danger is over.

There will be SIX minutes of added time.

Concern for the Bees as Josh McEachran has gone down and is in need of treatment. He’s had an injury hit couple of seasons but, thankfully, it looks as if he’s going to continue. Brentford have made preparations for extra time.

Brilliant counter attack from Brentford started by Yoann Barbet. He’s fouled by Will Nightingale, who is booked, Florian Jozefzoon can’t get the shot away.

Alfie Egan is on for Francomb

There are 3,329 here with 1,409 Brentford fans making the trip.

Brentford fans are giving George Long stick. A long punt forward has to be punched away by Daniels. We have 12 minutes left on the clock before we go to extra time.

  • Share

What?! George Long handles outside his area. The resulting shot from McEachran is over the bar but Dean Whitestone doesn’t go back for the free kick. That’s one of the strangest decisions I’ve ever seen.

Dons go close as Kwesi Appiah sees his effort cleared off the line. Barry Fuller then fires over the bar.

GOAL! AFC Wimbledon 1-1 Brentford (Romaine Sawyers 69)

WHAT A GOAL! Nico Yennaris looked as if he was being fouled but he stays on his feet. He finds Romaine Sawyers and he unleashes an unstoppable shot into the net.

Kwesi Appiah comes on and replaces Cody McDonald. Brentford are making a change as well with Josh McEachran coming on for Kamo Mokotjo

We’re into the final half hour and Wimbledon are looking good for their advantage at the moment. The Bees have been pretty disjointed and when they have got forward, they have been impatient and that’s allowed Long to make straightforward saves or the defence to clear.

Romain Sawyers is the first name into the book for a foul. It’s harsh in my view with some sterner challenges going unpunished earlier in this game.

  • Share

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, who has had a solid debut, works down the left and wins a corner. Brentford’s delivery has been found wanting. It’s deep but Yoann Barbet can’t make meaningful contact at the far post and George Long gathers.

The Dutchman is on for Josh Clarke. He’s had a decent game this evening.
