Stevenage 0–0 AFC Wimbledon

A combination of Kelle Roos' safe hands and a late Plymouth leveller at Cambridge sent AFC Wimbledon into the League Two play-offs this afternoon.

Roos made some vital first half stops in a game of few chances and little excitement at the Lamex, but all the drama was happening 30 miles away over the county boundary.

Cambridge had to win to take the battle for seventh place down to the last day, and when they fell behind midway through the second half, it mattered little what was happening in Stevenage.

A goalless draw in Hertfordhire would have been enough for the Dons, but the tables were turned when, with eight minutes left, Cambridge scored twice in as many minutes, meaning it would go down to the last dy.

But there was one more twist to come. No sooner had the finam whistle gone at the Lamex with no goals scored, than the away end exploded in delight as news of Graham Carey's injury time leveller for Plymouth filtered through.

But while Dons fans will be thankful to Carey, it was Roos' name they were signing earlier as three times he saved their skin.

First, the on-loan Derby County keeper charged out of his area to tackle Greg Rues as the Stevenage striker bore down on his goal.

Then came a superb double save, first denying Rues again with a point blank stop before throwing himself at the rebound shot from Dean Parrett and blocking that too.

The visitors had a few half-chances too, with Tom Pett getting back to make a last-ditch challenge of George Francomb, and Tom Elliott, who was earlier wide with a diving header, flicking on for Lyle Taylor, whose shot was blocked.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Sean Rigg going close for Wimbledon and Adam Marriott for Stevenage, but little of note for either keeper to do – but in the end it was events at Cambridge which proved to be more important.
