AFC Wimbledon 2-1 York City

Jack Smith struck a late winner against York City to end AFC Wimbledon's wait for a victory at Kingsmeadow.

The former Millwall full-back rifled home a superb drive on the stroke of full-time to give the Dons a 2-1 victory and their first three points since the 3-2 triumph over Luton Town last month.

Neal Ardley made four changes to the side that held Southend in midweek as Barry Fuller, George Francomb, Ade Azeez and Mark Phillips all came into the side and out went Tom Beere, Callum Kennedy, Craig Tanner and the ineligible Dave Winfield.

But it was one of those that kept his place who delivered the breakthrough midway through the first-half for the home side when Francomb, who has recovered from his recent hamstring problems, whipped in a corner and on-loan Cardiff City defender Adeji Oshilaja knocked it home.

York had a half chance when Michael Coulson latched onto a loose ball in the Dons penalty area but goalkeeper Joe McDonnell, standing in for the injured James Shea, watched it sail harmlessly over the bar and into the stand behind.

McDonnell was called up again shortly before the interval, this time spilling the ball at the feet of of an onrushing Mistermen attacker, and after an almighty goalmouth scramble and a suspicion of handball on the line it was Jake Hyde who forced it home to level things up.

It was a breathless start to the second half.

Emile Sinclair, who had come on as an early substitute in the first half due to an injury to Wes Fletcher, looked certain to score when he rounded McDonnell at the Tempest End but could only find the side netting with a low drive.

At the other end, Azeez twice went close to putting Wimbledon back in front as he first fired narrowly the wrong side of the post and then rose well to meet a corner but the former Charlton striker's header didn't trouble Bobby Olejnik between the sticks.

The second period become a turgid affair and there was little of note as Bayo Akinfenwa struggled to make inroads and Craig Tanner and Sean Rigg were thrown on by Ardley to try and turn the tide in favour of the hosts.

But there was late drama in Kingston. The York defence failed to clear their lines and the ball dropped nicely for Smith on the edge of the area. Pushing the referee out of the way to get to it, the defender lashed it home on the half volley seconds before the board was held up to signal injury time.
