If Diego Costa wants to be the all-time English league goalscorer he'll need to keep going for another 11 years.

The Chelsea forward currently has 17 Premier League career goals, 340 behind Jimmy Greaves' First Division record of 357.

Costa's English league goals have come at a rate of 0.8 per game this season.

That means that the Brazilian-born ace would need 11 more 38 game seasons to reach Greaves' record, if he keeps up his 0.8 per game ratio.

That's the closest of any current or former Chelsea player, with teammate Didier Drogba the next on the list.

The Ivorian needs another 254 goals to reach Greaves' record, and with a Premier League scoring ratio of 0.4 per game he'd reach the tally in 16 seasons.

Next on the list: Chelsea's Didier Drogba

The closest current Premier League player is Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United forward is 174 goals away from Greaves' record and if he were to maintain his career scoring ratio of 0.5 per game, then we would need to play for another 10 seasons to beat Greaves.

Van Persie is the next nearest and would need 11 seasons, as would Diego Costa, but only if he maintains his 0.8 goals per game ratio.

Closest current Premier League player: Man United's Wayne Rooney.

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero is 12 seasons away from Greaves' record.

The Argentine is 288 short of Greaves' record and would need to keep up his 0.6 goals per game ratio to get there in that time.

QPR's Charlie Austin is 15 seasons away from the record while Dame N'Doye's three goals in five games for Hull mean that he could beat Jimmy Greaves' record in 16 seasons if he keeps going at that rate.

Three other Premier League legends would break Greaves' record in 16 seasons if they were to maintain their career form - Frank Lampard, Drogba and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Jimmy Greaves' record was set when the top division had 42 games and not 38.

However, there were only seven seasons when Greaves played more than 38 league games, at a total of 21 matches.

Long way to go: Sergio Aguero

His scoring ratio was 0.7 goals per game, which, over 21 games, amounts to just under 15 goals.

If you deduct that from his 357 total he would still have 82 more goals than Alan Shearer's record.
