GARRY Haylock moved quickly to replace Nevin Saroya after his club captain left Church Road last week.

Saroya left to find first team football and regain match fitness having made only two league starts since Matt Ruby arrived in August.

The Hayes & Yeading United manager immediately swooped for Gary MacDonald who was on the bench at the weekend and is eligible for Saturday's home FA Trophy clash with Blue Square Premier strugglers Grays Athletic.

MacDonald, 29, played in the Foot-ball League with Peterborough United, made more than 120 appearances for Woking and last season won the Trophy with Ebbsfleet United, since when he has been with Bognor Regis Town.

"We're going to have a look at him," said Haylock. "We've obviously had a problem all season on the left side and we don't know what's happening with Ronnie (Bull) long term.

"He's got the right pedigree and he's got experience.

"With Nev gone and the uncertainty about Ronnie I thought I would sign him."

Bull's dual registration agreement runs out next month when he could return to Exeter City and MacDonald, as well as covering for the departed Saroya, has played plenty of games at left-back and even on the left of midfield.

Saroya, meanwhile, has decided to try his luck elsewhere after failing to break back into the side due to the form and fitness of Cadmore and Ruby.

The tall, skilful centre half was a Yeading stalwart for six years, making almost 200 appearances for the Ding whom he led into the third round of the FA Cup in 2005 when they played Newcastle United.

Haylock immediately installed him as captain at H&Y when the clubs merged but he has always polarised opinion at Church Road where his performances and disciplinary record have come in for much criticism, although the manager backed him to the hilt, not least for his leadership skills. He played 53 times for H&Y.

United go in search of a cup shock this weekend when Grays come to town, a Conference Premier club but only seven places separate them in the pyramid.

Haylock expects to be without Kieran Knight (broken toe) and Scott Fitzgerald (broken collar-bone) for at least two months after they were both injured last weekend, although there is better news in that Josh Scott, who failed a late fitness test, was due to play against Harefield United in the Middlesex Senior Cup last night (Tuesday).

Staforde Palmer (broken ankle) was also due to feature in that tie for his first appearance for more than two months, as was Leon Solomon, who hoped to make his long-awaited first team debut having joined the club at the start of the season.

Toby Little (dislocated kneecap) is still out but Steve Perkins (calf) might be fit for the Grays clash, while Ruby has served his one-game suspension.

Will Hendry will miss crucial league games with Chelmsford and both fixtures with Maidenhead United in the coming weeks after he was sent off on Saturday.

Haylock admitted he is looking closely at a couple of new players but he believes he has a strong enough squad to cope with the current injury situation.
