Bryan Ruiz claimed bragging rights over Giorgos Karagounis and Kostas Mitroglou as Costa Rica edged a nail-biting penalty shootout against Greece.

The Fulham forward thought he had done enough to win it in normal time when his 52nd-minute strike put the Central Americans in control.

Costa Rica were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Oscar Duarte saw red for a second yellow, and Greece eventually made the man advantage count to level at the death through Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Fulham flop Mitroglou almost snatched a dramatic winner in stoppage-time, only for Keylor Navas to spectacularly turn the striker's header over.

Mitroglou was denied again at the end of the added 30 minutes when Navas thwarted him from close range.

Ruiz and Mitroglou both converted their penalties, but Theofanis Gekas's miss proved costly as Costa Rica triumphed 5-3 on spot-kicks.
