Jose Mourinho has warned Chelsea’s new swashbuckling brand of football might come at the expense of poor results.

Mourinho's first stint as Blues boss was characterised by a philosophy where winning was everything and style was a distant second priority.

Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich has long yearned for a more exciting return on his investment though and prefers a more expansive approach.

The Special One has fallen into line with Abramovich’s demands since sweeping back into Stamford Bridge, making talented playmaker Oscar the focus of his new-look team.

However, Mourinho this week told Blues fans they will have to expect slip-ups like Tuesday’s League Cup exit at Sunderland as part of this transitional period for the club.

“We want this team to play the way we are playing,” he said. “We want this team to have evolution, but based on the way we are playing at the moment we have to finish opponents and we need goals to do that.

“Maybe the way to rectify it is to not concede goals and to have a different approach, to be more defensive, concede fewer goals and win matches with the few goals we score - but that's not what I want.

“We are going in one direction which is the right direction in terms of the quality of football we want to play, so it would be quite frustrating to change that, take a step back and go in another direction just because we want better results.”

Chelsea travel to the Emirates on Monday where they will lock horns with another side who prefer to play the beautiful game under manager Arsene Wenger.
