While most over-age Brentford fans are either enjoying a Saturday night out or sharing it with the family, head coach Dean Smith is tucked up in bed.

Matchday is the most exhausting day of the week and by the time Smith has prepared his side, overseen the result and then dealt with the post-match formalities the Bees boss is exhausted.

And he uses a Sunday morning round of golf and some time with his family to prepare for a week on the training ground ahead of the following game.

When asked for what a close to normal seven days for him would be in a Saturday-Saturday week, Smith said: “Close to normal is the Saturday game then bed by nine o'clock because I'm shattered from the game. I'm not sure the last time I've seen Match of the Day on a Saturday night.

“On Sunday, I like to go and have a game of golf on a free week, tee off at 7.30am in the morning. I'll clear my head with my mates and then family time.

“Training on Monday. On Tuesday there are usually meetings and planning for the week, the month and the season.

“We normally have a Wednesday off although we change it sometimes. Sometimes we have Monday and Tuesday off and train Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

“I watch a number of games and start planning meetings for the upcoming game the following week.”

Smith revealed that Brentford tend to start preparation for a fixture four games in advance.

He explained: "We've got an analysis department who'd have watched the last four games. Richard will watch a game, Thomas will watch a game and I'll watch a game as well. You're planning for the upcoming game but you're planning for the games that follow."
