West Ham youngster Nathan Mavila is trusting in Wealdstone boss Gordon Bartlett’s magic touch to get his football career back on track.

The 20-year-old winger cum left-back has seen precious little action during the final year of his contract with Slaven Bilic’s Premiership side.

So instead of simply letting the clock tick down on his time with the soon to be Olympic Stadium bound Hammers he sought out Bartlett with whom he enjoyed a successful spell on loan last season.

Happy to be back among the Stones family he is hoping a man with Bartlett’s track record for sending players back into league football can open a new door for him.

“I wasn’t really getting much game time at West Ham, so I took it upon myself to just call Gordon and see if he had any space or if it was alright if I came back,” he said

“Luckily for me he said yes and I want to thank him again for giving me another opportunity.

“Realistically if I don’t get another contract at West Ham I would have to drop down a few levels, but it is not a problem. Football is football, it’s all one game, so the key is to get solidly in somewhere.

“So this is not the worst move for me. It puts me in the window for people to come and have a look at me because Wealdstone is a good club. It is like a little family here – they look after you.”

Mavila excited the Stones’ faithful in his spell last season with his quick feet and ability to commit defenders and there were signs of the same in his appearance off the bench in Monday night’s vital win over Hayes & Yeading.

Mum’s cooking at the family home in Brixton also seems to have added a pound or two to his still slight frame ready for the rough and tumble that is Conference South.

The aim now is to recover sharpness lost by his lack of match action this season so Stones’ fans and anyone else who may be watching can see the best of him.

“Down at this level it gets a bit physical at times, so it is helping me out staying at home and staying grounded with my parents,” he added.

“I need to get some game time to get sharper as I haven’t played for a while. I went to Aldershot in January and didn’t play much there so the main thing is to get sharper and show everyone what I can do.”
