WEALDSTONE have backed referee Lee Venamore's decision to call off Saturday's Ryman Premier League match at Margate because of the inclement weather.

Gusts of more than 80mph and driving rain prompted Venamore to call off the game at 2.40pm, 20 minutes before the scheduled 3pm kick-off. That left many fans disgruntled, particularly the Stones fans who had made the trip to Kent. But Wealdstone manager Gordon Bartlett said common sense had prevailed.

"The weather was awful and the game would have been a farce had it gone ahead", he said.

"I feel sorry for the supporters who travelled a long way and can understand their frustrations. But we would all feel a lot more sorry for ourselves had we played in those conditions and got beaten. The skill level of the afternoon would not have been taken into account."
