Mark Warburton has no regrets over being honest with Brentford owner Matthew Benham, even though it means the pair will part company at the end of the season.

The popular Bees boss, who guided the club to promotion last season and seventh place so far in this campaign, did not feel he could work in the changing structures at Griffin Park.

Benham wants to use a mixture of traditional scouting and other tools including mathematical modelling, while the head coach will have no veto over incoming players.

Warburton and assistant David Weir decided they did not want to work under that setup so will leave at the end of the season, even if they take Brentford to the Premier League.

The Bees boss said after the 3-1 win over Bournemouth : “It’s one of those things. The statement came out and whatever job you do you have got to give yourself the best chance for success.

“If you have a disagreement over what I think are some key aspects, you’ve got to be honest.

“I’d hate to get to January, look back and think I should have been honest.”

Despite disagreeing over the direction the club should be going, Warburton and Benham remain on good terms and the Bees boss defended his owner.

He added: “Don’t forget it’s Matthew’s club, he’s put a significant investment (£90million) into the club, an ongoing investment, and he has right to take the club in whatever direction he thinks.

“He gave me the chance in the first place so I’ll have enormous respect for that and be thankful for the opportunity. But I also have to be honest with myself and so does David.”
