CLAIMS John Terry racially insulted Anton Ferdinand are a 'misunderstanding' and the English should be proud of their national captain, according to Andre Villas-Boas.

The Chelsea manager yesterday strolled into the furore surrounding the allegations, when he said of the 71-times capped defender: “He is England captain, the captain of your team and of your country. You should be proud.

“I am proud of Ronaldo. He is the captain of my team, Portugal; he takes us to a higher level in terms of representation.”

Chelsea are making no comment on the accusations, which are being investigated by both the FA and the police. Terry has issued a statement denying that any racially-motivated defence was intended.

Terry is expected to lead out his Chelsea team against Arsenal in today's lunchtime kick off at Stamford Bridge .

Asked if his captain could still be relied upon as a role model, Villas-Boas said: “I think all of us have our ups and downs in the past. I have had mine in the Premier League, and all of you (journalists) are the same.

“So I think all of us want to become better people with better values. But I don't want to emphasise speaking about better persons with better values, because this (investigation) is happening.”

The Chelsea boss said of the complaint made by Ferdinand's club, QPR: “I would say it is a big misunderstanding.”
