John Terry admits the sight of nine Chelsea men surrounding referee Bjorn Kuipers ahead of the red card for Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Wednesday night 'doesn't look good'.

Ibrahimovic got his marching orders, early in Paris Saint-Germain's ultimately successful trip to Stamford Bridge , after a 50-50 challenge with Oscar where both men had both feet off the ground.

Terry, as captain, was principal among those who raced to the scene to demand action from the official, and he says that while the sight of his side's reaction may not have been pleasant, that it is a part of the game.

“Once they're charging the referee, the only thing we can do is respond,” he said.

“You can't, as a group of players, let them surround the ref and try and get our players booked.

“As a group of players, and for me as well who had to run 20-30 yards, it doesn't look great.

“But when you stand back and you see five or six of their players surrounding the ref, for me, I have to go and support my team mates.

“And when I go, four or five come with me, it doesn't look good at all. But that's part of the game, and we'll kind of match it if people want to mix it. That's part of our game as well.”

Chelsea received plenty of criticism about the strategy from TV pundits and Liverpool legends Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher, both of whom have a reputation for getting in opponents' and officials' faces.

Asked about the accusations from the two men Terry said: “From them?!

“I don't want to go there, but as a group it's difficult because it's there and and you have to stick up for your team mates.

“The fans want to see that, and that's the same for every side. You go through different spells, and every other side is as bad as everyone else. It is part of it, and it is just maybe the excuse they are looking for tonight.
