DAVID Stockdale has warned Maarten Stekelenburg he faces a fight for Fulham's number one spot.
The 27-year-old has made just 18 league starts in his five years at Craven Cottage, spending most of the time playing second fiddle to Mark Schwarzer .
However, the Aussie was replaced in the summer by Stekelenburg, who will begin the season as first choice.
But Stockdale insists he will give the Dutchman a run for his money as he tries to wrestle the shirt from his grasp.
He said: “I will make Maarten or Neil Etheridge, whoever is in front of me, work for their job. That is what I am going to do, make it hard for them.
“We have fun outside when we are training together but that is my ultimate goal and whatever I do I will work hard and make sure they deserve that spot.
“For me, every day I have the chance to show the manager what I am capable of. When you are fighting to get into the first team you have got to really fight to get in there and then you can’t stop fighting – you have got to fight every day.
“Just because Mark Schwarzer was No1 for all those years does not mean that I was easing off and letting him be there.
“Sometimes I like to look at it that I was pushing him to be as good as he was. Obviously he is as good as he is anyway but you need to have that competition.”
