Dean Smith is hopeful that Nico Yennaris will be able to return to pre-season at, or near, 100 per cent fitness.

The midfielder has been battling a calf injury for the majority of the season and, at times, appeared to limit his impact in games.

However, Brentford's medical team have done a superb job on keeping Yennaris healthy enough to play and, with some rest over the off-season, the Bees head coach appears confident the former Arsenal man would be close to full strength come pre-season.

He said: “I think he's managing his injury and the management seems to be curing it and come pre-season he'll be 100 per cent hopefully.”

Despite carrying an injury in his calf, Yennaris was the only Bee to feature in all 46 games for the club.

Just two years ago, it appeared the 23-year-old was on the way out at Griffin Park after going on loan to Wycombe and not even making the squad when Marinus Dijkhuizen was down to the bare bones.

Now he's one of the first names on the team sheet and Smith paid tribute to the six-goal man's consistency.

He added: “I can't comment on what went on before I was here. He's been very consistent and he's been carrying an injury in his calf.

“His goal tally is very good. He's got great mobility and uses the ball really well for us.”
