Smart thinking by Fulham ensured they recouped a chunk of the £10.6m they paid for Bryan Ruiz after the club confirmed his move to Sporting Lisbon.
The club triggered a clause in May that meant the Costa Rica World Cup star could be sold rather than walk away for nothing.
Sporting will pick up the bill for an undisclosed fee for a player (see gallery) who failed to get a January move to Levante in La Liga due to red tape.
Boss Kit Symons made no secret Ruiz has been itching to get away all season - and finally managed it this time.
The 29-year-old joined the Whites in 2011 and he has signed a three-year deal in Lisbon with a £43m (60 million euro) buy-out clause.
Ruiz began his career in Europe with Gent and from there moved on to FC Twente, where he helped the club to the Eredivisie title in 2010.
That earned him his move to the Premier League thanks to Whites boss Martin Jol.
He was loaned out to PSV Eindhoven in January 2014, and reluctantly returned to feature 32 times last term in the Championship, scoring five goals.
