Brentford's poor form on the opening day of the season continued as they were beaten at Sheffield United.

The Bees have not won on the first day of the league campaign since 2011 and that run continued at Bramall Lane.

Brentford played some good stuff in the first half but failed to create a clear cut chance and the Blades punished some slack defending from a corner as Billy Sharp headed home.

Sharp and strike partner Leon Clarke had goals ruled out for offside but the introduction of Ollie Watkins and Nico Yennaris saw the west Londoners take control.

Jota forced a save from Jamal Blackman before Nico Yennaris hit the bar from the rebound. Lasse Vibe headed over from that one from two yards out.

Neal Maupay also had a chance late on to equaliser but Blackman was equal to it.

Dan Bentley – Nothing he could have done about the goal. 7

Henrik Dalsgaard – Looked lively going forward and caused problems for the Blades. 8

John Egan – Marshalled the troops well overall. 6

Andreas Bjelland – Did a solid job at the centre of defence. 6

Rico Henry – Caused problems going forward against a tough side. 7

Ryan Woods – Showed some flashes of brilliance on the ball as he looked to drive forward. 7

Josh McEachran – Sharp climbed over him for the goal. His passing and vision was excellent. 6

Kamo Mokotjo – The South African will have learnt a lot from his Championship debut. 6

Jota – United managed to limit his influence on the ball. When he did get in possession, he impressed. 7

Lasse Vibe – The Dane would feel he should have scored with his header. Suffered from a lack of service. 6

Florian Jozefzoon – Showed some impressive touches at times. 7

Ollie Watkins – Injected energy into the contest going forward. 7

Nico Yennaris – May have felt he should have equalised but his introduction put Brentford in charge. 7

Neal Maupay – Would feel he should have equalised late on. 6
