THEY are battling it out for a regular place on the right side of Brentford's midfield.

And it was Ricky Shakes and Wayne Brown who were the heroes of an Easter weekend winning double for the Bees.

Shakes got the ball rolling on Saturday with a brace which put paid to a poor Wrexham side, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win at Griffin Park.

Brown then netted the winner at Grimsby on Monday just six minutes after coming on as a late sub for Shakes.

However, that victory looked anything but on the cards when Grimsby went in a goal up at half-time.

Danny North gave them the lead on 17 minutes, heading home Nick Hegarty's cross after Brentford failed to clear a corner.

Bees keeper Simon Brown was in good form, saving twice from Martin Butler and then Peter Till, with North missing the rebound.

But despite being second-best, Andy Scott's men created a whole host of chances, with Nathan Elder being denied three times before Alan Connell, Glenn Poole and Shakes all went close.

But they had to wait until five minutes after the break to equalise, Connell finishing Craig Pead's cross from the right with a deft near-post header.

Elder and John Mousinho both headed wide before Grimsby came back, with sub Gary Jones missing a sitter and Simon Brown saving well from Ryan Bennett and Hegarty.

But two minutes later it was Brown's namesake, Wayne, who was the Bees' hero, finishing off a fine Brentford move on the break by twisting one way then another in the box, before slotting past home keeper Paul Barnes.

Grimsby, perhaps with one eye on their trip to Wembley next week in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final, never looked like getting back into it at that stage.

If anything, Brentford looked more likely to add to their lead, with Barnes saving superbly from a brilliant Poole free-kick with minutes left.
