San Marino are England's favourite microstate when it comes to international football.

The Three Lions have played the tiny republic on the Italian peninsula five times in the past and have won every single time.

They've racked up an impressive 31 goals in the process, an average of 6.2 per game, and have never scored fewer than five in a single match.

They have, however, conceded one goal against the Sammarinese, which just happened to be the fastest ever scored in a World Cup qualifier.

Davide Gualtieri famously put the ball past David Seaman after just 8.3 seconds back in 1993, though Graham Taylor's side eventually won the game 7-1.

England's record against San Marino is their best against any country still in existence to have a population of fewer than 500,000 people.

Only four other countries England have played fit that bill - Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Malta.

England also have a 100 per cent record against Andorra.

Roy Hodgson's side have played the country sandwiched between France and Spain four times in the past, scoring 16 goals in total, an average of four a game.

Andorra have managed to hold England to 0-0 at half-time twice, with Steve McClaren and his side famously being berated by fans on their way down the tunnel on one such occasion.

England enjoy their next best record against a microstate with Malta.

They've won each of their three games against the tiny island nation, scoring an average of 2.7 goals each time.

Their last meeting was in the build-up to the disastrous Euro 2000 campaign, with Kevin Keegan's side winning 2-1 in a performance that the BBC described at the time as "unconvincing".

Liechtenstein are the only side to have ever been beaten by San Marino and have also been beaten in both of the two games that they have played against England.

Both were qualifiers for Euro 2004 and both finished 2-0.

England's worst record against a country with a population of less than 500,000 is with Iceland.

The two sides have played each other twice with the first meeting in 1982 ending 1-1 and the second in 2004 ending 6-1 to the Three Lions.
