Brentford claimed a deserved 2-0 victory over QPR to claim their first win at Loftus Road since October 1964.

Josh Clarke capped an excellent first half performance with a goal in the closing stages of the opening 45.

QPR were better after the break but were hit on the counter as Romaine Sawyers lashed the ball into the top corner with 16 minutes to go.

Below are five reasons behind Brentford's superb victory.

Super Joshy Clarke

1-0: Josh Clarke scores

The man of the match was young Brentford winger Josh Clarke. He gave QPR full back Jack Robinson a torrid time and created a number of chances.

He switched to the left flank as well and did the same to James Perch and he found enough space to give the Bees the advantage.

Being able to perform as well as he did given his relative inexperience is a massive plus. The cauldron of a west London derby did not faze him in the slightest – instead it inspired him.

Clarke has come on a long way in the last 12 months and, while he is nowhere near the finished article, he has a bright future in the game.

Zero to hero

Romaine Sawyers

On almost the exact minute that Romaine Sawyers was jeered when he was withdrawn, he was hailed to the rafters as he slotted home Brentford's second.

The former Walsall man produced his best performance in a Bees shirt as he harried the QPR defence when he could and also got back to do the defensive work as well.

And he was rewarded when he laced home Lewis MacLeod's pass into the top corner in front of the Brentford fans.

Fan favourite Jota benefited from scoring a last minute winner against Fulham; Sawyers may well benefit from Friday night.

Horrendous luck

Has Lewis Macleod broken a number of mirrors? The Scot has had a string of injuries since joining Brentford and suffered another one at Loftus Road.

After a battle for the ball, the midfielder went down clutching his knee and was stretchered off after a lengthy stoppage for him to receive treatment.

It's still too early to say how long Macleod will be out for but Brentford will be hoping it's not the long term injury that's feared.

Hogan's hard work

Scott Hogan

Scott Hogan was off the boil against Barnsley but produced a much better performance for the team at Loftus Road.

The striker's movement off the ball was excellent and he created space for both Sawyers and Clarke to score their goals.

He would have wanted to do better with the chances he had in the contest but he can take heart from his display.

Pace the difference

On top: Harlee Dean

The likes of Clarke, Sawyers and Hogan are naturally quick players and they were able to out-speed Rangers.

It was this facet that outlined the main difference between the two sides and why Brentford were worthy winners and ended their Loftus Road hoodoo that stretched back to 1964.

Every player stood up to be counted and they can enjoy the weekend now as they prepare for the next west London derby against Fulham on Friday.
