Brentford co-director of football Rasmus Ankersen believes the club have taken important steps in what has been a transitional season for the Bees.

The club restructured over the summer with the Dane and Phil Giles coming in as co-directors of football after the departure of Mark Warburton, who did not want to work in the new environment.

Their first season at the helm has been one of ups and downs both on and off the pitch, which also had to be relaid after just two competitive games.

Marinus Dijkhuizen lasted eight games before he was axed with Lee Carsley taking over and Dean Smith was appointed in December.

All head coaches have had to deal with a crippling injury list as well as players leaving the club.

Ankersen said: “There's been a lot of ups and downs. It's a long term project I think we've made some important decisions to take the club forward and we're still a club in transition.

“We're working on creating a foundation we can build on for the future and we've taken important steps in the last 12 months.

The co-directors of football, in particularly Ankersen, have come under fire over the course of the season.

The Dane accepts mistakes have been made but all decisions have been made with the club's best interests at heart.

He added: “The Brentford fans are very passionate and we love that. You've got to have thick skin in football as not everyone knows the context of the decisions that are being made.

“We need to be able to look in the mirror and say we've done what is best for the club. Some will like it, some will not like it. Some decisions will be successful, some will fail.

“I think it's been a tough season for the supporters but thanks for continuing to support us. We feel we've learned a lot and we'll learn for next season.”

For Giles, he believes that the foundations are in place, now, to ensure the 2016/17 campaign will be a good one.

He said: “We've got stability with the coaching staff and we've got a foundation to build on, compared to last summer.

“Hopefully, next season, we'll be able to start to build a stable squad as opposed to the transition this season.”

Giles added: “There's been so much happening this season with injuries, pitches, three managers, players striking, broken legs; all this kind of stuff. It can't happen every season surely.”

Both Giles and Ankersen listed their favourite moment of the campaign as Brentford's 1-0 win over QPR in October.
