QPR striker Matt Smith has hailed new signing David Wheeler, saying he knows how hard it is to make your mark at a higher level.

Smith started his career in Non-League football before joining Oldham Athletic on his rise through the football pyramid, and he says that Wheeler's goal against Middlesbrough last week will help him to settle.

Speaking of Wheeler's start, Smith said: "He’ll be delighted. Obviously coming from a League Two side it was his first start at this level so that will settle any nerves that he’ll have had.

"I know full well what that’s like coming from League One but also the same route from Non League to the Championship, you want to hit the ground running and he’s done that.

"That’ll have eased any doubts that he’d have that he can play at this level because he put in a really good performance, got a goal and that’ll do him the world of good."
